Up the Down Staircase: How to Build Up When Everything Seems to be Falling Down?

2237 Rayburn House Office Building

In a polarized world, where the public square has become increasingly hostile, how do we continue to make progress on the things we are called to build? Is it even possible to build anything at the moment?

With a strong track record of working under challenging circumstances to bring about societal change, Baroness Philippa Stroud identified the steps needed to renew culture, starting with healthy institutions. Drawing on her work with the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship, Stroud discussed how policymakers can foster changes in society that ensure that citizens can take hold of the opportunities in front of them and develop the personal resilience to serve over decades.

Baroness Philippa Stroud is a Member of the House of Lords and a leading public influential in the UK. She is the co-founder, and since November 2023, the chief executive officer of the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship and Chair of the Social Metrics Commission. Prior to this, she was the CEO of the Legatum Institute and Co-Founder and Chief Executive of the Centre for Social Justice. She was created a life peer on October 1, 2015 taking the title Baroness Stroud, of Fulham in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
